1. Does my car need new tires every year?
Time is not always a criterion for replacing tires, the physical condition is. If tread wear bars appear, it is a telltale sign that you should get new ones. Tread wear bars are the narrow strips that appear as smooth rubber patches on the tire, wherever the grooves have disappeared. If these bars exceed 3 in number, it is time to get the tires replaced.
You may also need replacement when
- You can see the tire’s cord or fabric through the any cuts, cracks or worse, through the rubber itself
- There is a visible puncture or massive damage that cannot be repaired
- The sidewall or treads show splits or bulges through them
2. When do I know it is time to get my car shock absorbers checked?
Regular car maintenance ensures that the shock absorbers are checked every time the servicing is done. But there could be certain cases wherein you need to get it checked thoroughly:
- Tires are cupping (abnormal wearing off from either side).
- You are not experiencing a smooth ride.
- Braking makes your car nosedive.
- The car squats more towards either side/.
Also, every time you get a tire replacement or rotations, it is a rather good idea to get the suspension checked thoroughly.
3. Does a weird sound from the bonnet mean a faulty radiator?
It could be that or something else. And this is why you need to get it checked. An overheated radiator could be causing that noise to emanate from the bonnet. Rarely will you find it to be the result of a faulty radiator. The reason behind overheating could be a few, including a poorly installed radiator.
In any case, you will know only when you get it checked from a radiator repair specialist, which you should do ASAP.
4. What do I make of it when the car’s engine light is on?
In the highly engineered cars of the present day, if your engine light is on, it could mean a number of things from a bad engine to an electrical issue to loose gas cap. The best and the only way to fix it is to get it checked from your trusted car repair & maintenance service as soon as possible. In case it is a serious problem, your car could halt in the middle of nowhere and refuse to start.
5. Can I check the coolant level of my car on my own?
Yes, you can do that through a fairly simple process. Just keep in mind to do it when the engine is cool.
Almost all cars feature an opaque coolant overflow tank. It is located close to or right next to the radiator. Since it is white in color, despite its opacity, you are able to see the coolant level. The tank also carries markers indicating levels.
